A green card renewal costs $540, which comprises $455 for filing Form I-90 and $85 for a biometrics fee. You are exempt from paying a fee if you availed of a waiver. You might have to pay one or both of these fees depending on the reason for renewing your green card. In other circumstances, you might not even be required to pay a fee.

Green card renewal fee depending on the situation:

  1. Specific Conditions in which fees for the I-90 Filing and the Biometric Services (both) are required:
  • Your present green card has expired, or you will do it in the next six months.
  • Your green card was stolen, vandalized, or lost.
  • Since receiving your previous green card, your name has changed.
  • You have obtained commuter status as a permanent resident.
  • You are already using commute status but now residing permanently in the United States.
  • You turn 14 years old, and before you reach 16, your current green card will expire.
  • Situations in which a filing fee for Form I-90 or a fee for biometric services is not necessary:
  • The current information on your green card is incorrect due to an error made by the Department of Homeland Security. 
  • USCIS issued your green card, but you never got it (returned to USCIS as undeliverable).
  • The situation in which the Biometric Services fee is required only:
  • You are 14 years old, but your existing green card will expire at 16.

How to pay the price for renewing your green card?

  1. Online file: If you file Form I-90 online, you will be prompted to make an electronic credit card payment after completing the form.
  2. File via email: If you submit your application via mail, you can pay with a money order, personal cheque, cashier’s cheque, or credit card using Form G-1450 (officially known as the “Authorization for Credit Card Transactions”), all of which should be made payable to the “U.S. Department of Homeland Security.”

Documents required for green card renewal:

For green card renewal, you are required to present;

    • A copy of your green card, which has expired or is about to expire.
  • Additional documents are required if you request a new green card for various reasons, such as the previous one being misplaced, stolen, or destroyed. 

Acceptance notification:

When USCIS accepts your renewal application, they will send you a confirmation letter. You can use the 13-characters “receipt number” (made up of 3 letters and ten numbers) mentioned in the letter to find out the status of your renewal application. UCSC will also post the same notification on your USCIS online account. 

Obtain a “biometrics” alert:

You will receive notification of your biometrics appointment within 1-2 weeks of receiving your application by USCIS to take your fingerprints, photo, and signature. You might also need to provide more details or supporting documentation to complete your green card renewal. If so, make sure to submit it before the deadline.

How to check the status of your green card renewal?

Enter your receipt number on the USCIS “Check Status” page to check your entire application history.

Fill out Form G-1145 (formally known as the “e-Notification of Application/Petition Acceptance”) and submit it with your green card renewal application if you want to get a text message or email from USCIS after acceptance of the form.

Green card replacement fee:

Before scheduling a meeting at the American Embassy or Consulate, applicants must pay the $575 service fee via the USCIS online payment system (ELIS). To pay the cost, applicants will require their A number, which they can get at the nearby USCIS office.

Please be aware that before visiting a consular section in person, you must pay the filing fee on the USCIS website if you intend to submit a Form I-131A to request an LPR boarding ticket. When you come in person to file Form I-131A, you must bring proof of payment as a printed email receipt notification or confirmation page. USCIS will not refund any fee regardless of the outcome of the application.
